Situational mutism
You can’t see situational mutism and young people with situational mutism look like most other young people, however you might notice things about them that are a bit different.
This is because situational mutism can sometimes make a young person behave and talk in ways that are unexpected. Like everyone else, young people with situational mutism are individuals and situational mutism affects each person a bit differently.
The main thing about situational mutism is that young people who have it can’t talk comfortably with people in every situation. If they are at home with their parents and close family they are usually able to talk, but if they go out and other people are around, or people they don’t know very well come to their house, they get anxious and the words won’t come out. It is usually worst when they are at school because school is full of people they don’t know very well.
